Understanding · Trust · Responsibility
Magic Baseline
It works. But does anyone still understand why?
A system can keep running long after the context behind it has been lost.
The next change reveals whether we merely know the system's current state — or still understand why it is that way.
Magic Baseline begins before the next change.
If this feels familiar
An exception is about to be removed. No one remembers why it was once necessary.
A system is about to be migrated. No one can say with confidence what depends on it.
The colleague who knows it is leaving. The documentation remains. Is that enough?
Three questions that remain
Understanding
Why was it built this way?
Documentation shows what is there. Understanding explains why.
Trust
What do we trust — and can we verify its basis?
Trust is stronger when its basis can be verified.
Responsibility
Who can explain the consequences of change?
Technology executes. Responsibility remains with people.
“The strongest systems are not those with the greatest number of security tools. They are those whose foundations are understood.”
Magic Baseline · Volume II

The complete trilogy
Three perspectives. One book.
For the moment when “it works” is no longer an answer.
Understanding · Trust · Responsibility
An English edition is not currently scheduled.
Security doesn't come from the next expensive proprietary tool.
It begins with understanding your own environment.
Not every problem needs another tool. A tool can close a specific technical gap. But it cannot replace an understanding of the environment in which it is used.
The first question is not: “Which tool are we missing?” It is: “Which capability are we actually missing?”
Open standards first. Open source as the technical foundation. No new proprietary dependencies.
Why this belongs to the concept
For the admin who is losing heart.
Sometimes advice is not what is needed. Just a starting point.
“Start with what you can understand.”
If we claim that trust is verifiable, we should show how.
Transparency makes selected verification results publicly visible. Operational details remain protected.
